Are peanuts safe for birds?

Yes — peanuts are safe for garden birds when they are sold as wild bird food and offered the right way. Problems usually come from poor-quality nuts, damp storage, or whole peanuts being taken by young birds.

Choose bird-grade peanuts

Buy peanuts marketed for wild birds. Store them cool and dry in a sealed container so they do not go mouldy. Discard any that smell musty or look spoiled.

Use a proper peanut feeder

A mesh peanut feeder lets birds peck small pieces. Avoid leaving piles of whole peanuts on the ground where fledglings might try to swallow them whole. Granules or chopped peanuts are another option for trays.

Who eats peanuts?

Great tits, blue tits, nuthatches, woodpeckers, sparrows and many others will visit a peanut feeder. They are a high-energy food — useful in winter, still fine in moderation year-round.

See peanuts & peanut granules, including Gardman Peanuts 2kg, and match them with a sturdy peanut feeder from our feeders range.

Keep feeders clean and move them occasionally to protect the ground underneath. Fresh water nearby completes the setup.
